I caved in and ordered a pair of nokian extremes from bob at iron city bikes, it's a small price to pay for not breaking myself
One thing I've noticed with winter biking is the frontal plane core stability challenge, my obliques really get a burn controlling the fishtailing of the bike in the slushy patches. I first noticed it when i moved back to Ohio and was riding a fixed gear road bike with knobby tires around to stay in shape, it's less so with the mountain bike, but still a good workout

Studded bike tyres are awesome

I borrowed my neighbor's mountain bike with nokian extreme 294 tires for riding around the not quite plowed streets of pittsburgh yesterday, and they were awesome

This is what they look like, I would say they have 80% improvement in traction over regular mountain tires, only getting stuck in really deep powder snow, the traction is so good I end up popping wheelies half the time and fishtailing is almost nonexistant

Vibram 5 fingers follow up
These things are great. I went to Bikram Yoga in the strip the other day and felt a level of fatigue in my feet that was downright refreshing, the foot intrinsic muscles are really working.
I've been performing my workouts in them also. I can really sense the weight distribution change from heel to big toe to little toe as my center of gravity changes. The biggest effect is realizing how hard it is for me to push my 1st metatarsal down to heighten my arch, I like the shoes because they give me a constant reminder to improve.
